ABOVE the FLAMES

Darkness this world tends to.
Corruption, the order of the day.
Oldness, everything descends to.
Death, no one escapes its sway.

All men are touched by sin and death,
Even the best, till their final breath.
What is there that isn’t vain?
What is there that causes no pain?

Hearts and minds filled with fear;
Souls full of self, pushing love away.
Children of men live only for today;
Utter destruction is always near.

The times are designed to insulate
From the gnawing sense of dust.
Surely there is something doesn’t turn to rust?
Can there be something that escapes the hate?

The most evil event by men ever devised
Was perpetrated against the One despised.
He who was nailed to a splintery cross
Has been provided to remove our dross.

Why should we be surprised by this wonder?
Our hearts are hard as diamond rocks;
When all the time our lives tic-tock.
Who can remove this awful spell we’re under?

Lives filled with things that do not last;
Lungs, hearts and bodies fading fast.
Toys and things that shine all around
While we slowly sink and drown.

O, wrap me in That which does not perish!
The things of rot and dust let not consume
O Affections, soul and mind do groom
for th’  eternal I alone aim to cherish.

Let me long for that Above the flames
And set my sight on the Name above all names.
The Light that is never dark and is always Bright
Is the only escape from the decay of this night.
